See Come From Away on Apple TV+ on September 10th

Many months ago, on April 17th to be exact, the Broadway company of Come From Away reunited in a rehearsal hall in midtown Manhattan. It was the first time they had been together since all theatres shut down in March 2020. A few weeks later, they moved into the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on 45th St., which has been the home of Come From Away since January 2017 and was now outfitted with state-of-the-art cameras and filming equipment.

On May 8th, in front of an invited audience of 9/11 survivors and front-line workers, the company performed Come From Away, and the award-winning film company RadicalMedia — which had previously filmed Hamilton and David Byrne’s American Utopia — captured this amazing performance on film.

The film was directed by Christopher Ashley, who was awarded the Tony for his direction of the stage musical. Christopher has been with Come From Away from its very early days, bringing the show to the stage at his theatre, La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, where it had its professional world premiere in 2015. Chris then brought the show to Toronto’s Royal Alex in November 2016 before transferring it to Broadway in 2017.

Chris writes: “It is my great pleasure to reach out to you today — you, the first audience to embrace Come From Away and to help the show take the first steps on its incredible journey. Because of your early support for the show, five productions have launched around the globe and now the whole world will be able to see the filmed version when it premieres on Apple TV+. As we approach the 20th anniversary of September 11th, and after the challenges of the last 18 months, I believe that the message of Come From Away resonates more deeply now than ever. In a moment of fear and uncertainty, the amazing people of Newfoundland showed us the power of kindness and generosity — reaching out a hand when a neighbour or stranger was in need.

“It was an honour to make this film. To reunite with our cast and crew, and bring so many new people into our Come From Away family — the family you helped us create — was a true joy. It’s difficult to describe the emotion in the room on our final day of shooting as we welcomed the first audience back to see a Broadway show, after so many months of our theatres being shut down. As our film is about to reach its widest audience yet, I want to thank you for getting us started, and giving us our first home.

“Please join me on September 10th to once again be among the first audiences to see Come From Away when it premieres on Apple TV+. You can watch the film on tv.apple.com or sign up for your free trial*. I can’t wait for you to see it.”
