OVERVIEW

Experience the magic of Disney’s The Lion King in a special Relaxed Performance, thoughtfully adapted for those who may find traditional shows overwhelming. Enjoy softer lighting and gentler sound, along with the freedom to move, make sounds, or take breaks as needed. Quiet spaces and an activity zone are available. Our friendly Front of House staff are also there to support you throughout your time at the theatre.

We’re excited to welcome members of the neurodivergent community and anyone who feels a relaxed performance would suit their needs. Our goal is for every patron to feel safe, comfortable, and free to enjoy this unforgettable journey - because in our kingdom, everyone belongs, and every roar is celebrated. Hakuna Matata: it means no worries, for the rest of your days.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE RELAXED PERFORMANCE

Technical adjustments will be made to the show to create a more sensory-friendly experience.

Lighting adjustments

  • The lights in the auditorium, where you will be seated, will stay dimmed but not completely turned off during the whole show.
  • Flashing lights, or strobe lighting will not be used.
  • Moving lights that shine around the audience will be turned off.

Sound adjustments

  • The volume will not be too loud and will be kept at a comfortable level below 90 decibels.
  • Sound effects will be quieter and less intense.
  • Loud thunder sound effects will not be used.
  • Drums and other percussion sounds will be softer

You are welcome to move around in your seat, stim, fidget, or make sounds during the show – whatever helps you feel the most comfortable. You are also able to exit and re- enter the auditorium at designated times, when there is no cast movement in the audience.

We will also have a dedicated Free-to-Roam seating area for anyone who would like the option to stand up and stretch, or have greater flexibility to exit and re-enter the auditorium.

You may also bring your own fidget toys, as well as vision and hearing protection equipment.

Yes! Before the show starts, one of the cast members will say hello and welcome everyone. They will explain what a relaxed performance means, share what you can expect during the show, and will also let you know about any scenes that might be a little challenging.

There will be two private rooms set aside as quiet spaces for anyone who needs a calm break during the show. One of these quiet rooms will have soft, dimmed lighting to create a relaxing atmosphere.

The CAA lounge will be the Activity Zone, where fidget toys and colouring materials will be provided to keep hands busy and minds calm.

Closer to the show date, there will be a detailed Venue Guide to help you get to know the Princess of Wales Theatre and understand what to expect when attending a show. This guide will make it easier for you to find your way around and know what is coming up during a performance.

There will also be a Relaxed Performance Guide available. This guide will highlight any scenes that may potentially cause dysregulation. It will also include a character guide, so you can get familiar with the story and characters before the show begins.

These resources are here to help you feel prepared and confident, making your time at the theatre as enjoyable as possible.

Along with our existing accessibility supports, we will have extra trained staff on hand during the relaxed performance. Our Front of House team is specially prepared to help and make sure everyone feels comfortable and supported throughout their time at the theatre.
