Dear eStagers,

Thanks to all the eStagers and season subscribers and their friends, relations and associates who showed up this morning - on such short notice, too - at the Steam Whistle Brewery at Roundhouse Park for the big announcement (and free coffee, tea, croissants, muffins and Danishes). For those of you who couldn't make it down and are dying to know, here's what it was all about:

LONDON'S HIT THE RAILWAY CHILDREN STEAMS INTO TORONTO!

As the song says, "Listen to the jingle, the rumble and the roar/Hear the mighty, rushing engine, hear the lonesome whistle call." Remember that one? The talk of London this past season has been a new play that brings those lyrics back to mind - for those of us old enough to remember them, anyway. The Railway Children has just finished a sell-out engagement there - not in one of your usual West End theatres, however, but across the river, in Lambeth, in a railway station, of all places. And the reason for this is that the show requires railway tracks. And the reason for that is that it "stars" a working, moving, huffing and puffing, 66-ton vintage steam locomotive.

The Railway Children is based on the famous Edwardian-era novel by Edith Nesbit about Bobbie, Peter and Phyllis, three children - reduced to poverty after their father is unjustly imprisoned - who move from their middle class London home to a poor, rural cottage beside the railroad tracks. The children befriend the local railway porter and embark on a magical journey of discovery, friendship and adventure, etc., etc., etc.

The unique, new stage production has been performed in London's Waterloo Station on moving platforms that roll along railroad tracks, with the audience seated on either side, with the London critics calling it things like, "Spectacular" (The Mail on Sunday), "Thrilling" (The Guardian) and "Magnificent" (The Evening Standard). It has also, by the way, broken all London box office records for a play!

And now, The Railway Children is coming to Toronto, with performances to begin on May 3, in a new 1000-seat theatrical venue built just for the show!

WELCOME TO TORONTO'S NEWEST VENUE: THE ROUNDHOUSE THEATRE!

Toronto's newest venue, the Roundhouse Theatre, will be located beside the old CN Roundhouse - now the Steam Whistle Brewery - in Roundhouse Park, at Bremner Blvd. and Lower Simcoe St., below the CN Tower, beside the Rogers Centre and within walking distance of the restaurants and attractions of the Entertainment District.

Roundhouse Park, home of the Toronto Rail Heritage Centre, features fun and lively new "museum" attractions maintained by the Toronto Railway Historical Association. Built around an old railway turntable, the park has original steam locomotive water and coaling towers, an historic railway station (which will become the theatre box office), a collection of working steam and diesel locomotives and even a miniature passenger-carrying steam train. Roundhouse Park brings back the thrilling sights and sounds of Toronto's railroading past, making it the perfect place to stage The Railway Children!

And that's the story of today's announcement! The York Theatre Royal production of The Railway Children - with a new all-Canadian cast - will be presented in Toronto by Matthew Gale and Jenny King for the Touring Consortium (RC) International and Robert Richardson for Marquis Entertainment, with tickets available through TicketKing (that's us).

Tickets are available NOW for groups of 10 or more through Mirvish Group Sales at 416.593.4142 or 1.800.724.6420. Single tickets will be available as of April 4, 2011, and we'll be reminding you about that as we approach the date! Stay tuned!
